  2. Hygiene: Sucking Blood From A Newly Circumcised Penis In New York City

    Right after circumcision, the penis bleeds. In New York City, some traditional, Orthodox mohels (people who circumcise according to the Jewish religion) suck blood from the penis, a procedure called MBP (metzitzah b'peh). Some of those traditional, Orthodox mohels (for example, as far as we know, some Satmar mohels) put their mouth directly on the (according to ex-URL www.thejewishweek.com/news/newscontent.php3?artid=11944) penis to suck the blood. This mouth-wound contact sometimes infects babies. The infections sometimes cause serious harm, even death. For example, there seems to be some evidence that Rabbi Fischer, a Monsey (Rockland county) mohel, may have killed one baby and damaged another's brain. Incidentally, there is a scholarly article about this kind of infection, based on Israeli (not New York city) patients, in Pediatrics, August 2004, volume 114(2), pages 259-63, "Neonatal genital herpes simplex virus type 1 infection after Jewish ritual circumcision: modern medicine and religious tradition", by B. Gesundheit and others. We are under the vague impression (unsupported by legal research) that it is a felony to suck a penis in New York state. When a felony results in a death, the death is first degree murder. We are so ignorant of kosher rules that we don't know if it is kosher for a mohel to suck human blood into the mouth as part of circumcision. Some rabbis oppose MBP. Most circumcisions do not include MBP. In New York city, MBP is most common among Satmar Jews. What is mayor Bloomberg doing to protect his city's babies? New Yorkers should be grateful to have a mayor who publicly denounces a harmless Web site but does not publicly denounce a practice which infects babies, sometimes fatally.
